Elder abuse is a significant issue that impacts a large number of older individuals. It is defined as any act or failure to act within a relationship where trust is expected, resulting in harm or distress to an elderly person. Elder abuse can manifest itself in various ways, such as physical, emotional, sexual, financial abuse, and neglect.
Identifying signs of elder abuse is crucial. Unexplained injuries, behavior changes, and financial exploitation are red flags. Older adults who are frail, isolated, or struggling with depression, physical disabilities, or mental illnesses are vulnerable. We must protect our elderly loved ones.
Local and national resources can help prevent and resolve elder abuse. Each state has a service called Adult Protective Services that investigates claims of elder abuse. The Eldercare Locator connects older Americans with information about services. The National Center on Elder Abuse provides resources on preventing and intervening in elder abuse.
All individuals must understand that the act of reporting elder abuse falls upon everyone’s shoulders. If you happen to have suspicions regarding the mistreatment, negligence, or exploitation of an older adult, it is imperative that you promptly notify the relevant authorities. In many states, Adult Protective Services holds the responsibility of thoroughly investigating any reported instances of elder abuse. Additionally, The National Center on Elder Abuse offers a comprehensive list of state elder abuse hotlines that can be utilized to report any suspected occurrences.
Three resources for nursing on elder abuse:
1. The National Institute on Aging provides information on elder abuse and how to identify signs and get help.
2. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention offers a fact sheet on recognizing and reporting elder abuse and resources for caregivers.
3. The National Council on Aging provides information and support for both caregivers and older adults, standing of elder abuse while gaining valuable tools to combat this widespread issue effectively.
