The amount of people that died at Memorial Hospital was higher than all other surrounding facilities that were impacted by the hurricane. Unfortunately there were 45 deaths.
They must prove that the hospital ended up following the hospital’s disaster plan. Along with copies of deaths. They must assure that the hospital was not responsible for the deaths.
They informed the patient about deaths of family members through a phone call. But they were not quick about informing them, some took 2 weeks. Which is extremely sad to think about. Patients were evacuated by buses and brought to hotels. Where they were provided with shelter, food, and were eventually reunited with families.
Families had stated that their loved ones seemed stable when they had seen them. Investigators found out that there was a possibility that euthanasia had taken place in the hospital during the hurricane. The families had informed the investigators of this. It appeared in autopsies that some patients had been giving medications that were not prescribed to them, like morphine and midazolam.
Scafafers states “don’t get emotionally involved.” However, it seemed like he himself was struggling to follow this. His daughter had passed due to the hospital using medications. Two medications should not have been taken at the same time. When the two medications that were prescribed are taken at the same time a negative effect takes place. The doctors and pharmacy should have caught this mistake.
