Both Cheri and Lori worked as nurses at Memorial Hospital. They were both faced with challenging decisions during the hurricane. Morphine was detected in a few of the patients they cared for, even when there were no orders for morphine. Both nurses did admit to doing so, and were both arrested. Karen stated that she believed the patients needed it, and that was what was best to do. She believed that all patients deserved to be comfortable and treated with dignity. Karen’s testimony was conspicuously absent from the grand jury proceedings.
I feel as though to most Americans death is a topic that is not widely talked about, nor do people like talking about it even when the conversation needs to take place. This can lead people to being very unprepared. There are many cultures and religions that see death as the beginning of new life, but for Americans many of us see death as the end.
I believe that justice was served. The nurses and doctors tried to do everything they could to keep patients comfortable, and provide them with the best care they could given the circumstances. The hospital staff that were arrested and charged were not convicted of murder. This helped relieve some of the guilt that they were all feeling. However, I do believe that the patients deserved better care, and feel as if there is a next time Memorial Hospital will be much better prepared.
