Medication safety is extremely important for the nurse to know. The nurse needs to always use the 6 rights of medication (who, what, when, where, why, how) when administering meds to provide proper and safe care. On top of the 6 rights of medication the nurse must always do 3 safety checks as well to help avoid medication errors. It is very important the nurse knows who the person is she is medicating, what the medication is and what it’s suppose to do, any adverse effects it may cause. Nurses are always allowed to contact the pharmacist with any questions. As well as drug books are great additional resources for nurses while administering medication. After safe administration of medication the nurse must ALWAYS document because if it isn’t documented then it’s considered to have never happened which could lead to potential double dosing.
