1.It is easy to question the staff members at memorial about the katrina that why they are not prepared for emergency protocols. But they did everything humanly possible to save the patients.Maybe a lot of them at memorial made mistakes but they made the best decisions at the time . The hospital has to prepare for natural disaster and other emergency protocols in order to protect the patients .
2.Thiele’s experience of the hurricane at memorial was like no other to what he has experienced before. After looking at the state of patients in the second floor, the suffering they were going through he was more inclined towards euthanizing these patients as they will not survive to get out of the memorial.
As he did for the pets , he started administering patients with morphine and midazolam to ensure them the critically ill patients go through less suffering .
On one occasion a man even after administering 100mg of the drug was still breathing and at that point he felt it’s okay to smother and euthanize him rather than he going through the adverse effects of the hurricane in the hospital.
3.All doctors and staff members provided patient care to their best even though they are running out of supplies. The priority system for evacuating patients did not fit within accepted triage practices because the patients are not prioritized based on the type and urgency of their conditions.
The decision to euthanize the critically ill patients was based on assumption to the most part.
Dr cook is concerned administering morphine was a way of helping the patients to get out of terrible situations.
Dr pou priority was to keep the patients comfortable and tried to help the patients who are in pain but later agree to euthanize the patients .
Dr. Deichmann told there was not any need to euthanize anyone .The plan was to evacuate the people ,eventually.
Pou,Budo and Landry symbolized the people in whose hands everyone places their lives in times of sickness.
Virgina Rider and Butch Schafer did not believe justice had reached its end in the case.
